The Speaker is the representative of the Chamber of Deputies when it speaks collectively, and the supervisor of its works and order. The office is exclusive for born Brazilians. Its main competence is to define the propositions agenda to be discussed by the Plenary Assembly. Among other duties, the President of the Chamber of Deputies replaces the President of the Republic and is part of the Council of the Republic and the National Defence Council.
