Brazilian representation issues statement on composition of Parlasur

The Brazilian Representation in Parliament Mercosur (Parlasur) today released a technical note to clarify the process of implementation of Citizen Representation Criterion and the current composition of Parliament.

The memo notes that the Mercosur representatives in the current stage of Parliament are deputies and senators who are in office in their countries and do not receive any remuneration for his outstanding performance as members of the Mercosur Parliament. The salaries of the future of Mercosur representatives directly elected will be defined in domestic law, which is already currently in the House of Representatives.

Proportionality of parties

Currently, the Brazilian Representation consists of 18 subjects, who are 9 deputies and 9 senators, with an equal number of substitutes, appointed by an act of Congress signed by the President.

Proportionality for next year will be made after the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) publishes the final list of senators and deputies elected.

Budget

In Brazil, U$250,000 was named in the Union Budget. Brazilian members of Congress do not receive any remuneration for the Representative performance in Mercosur. Each legislative house is responsible for paying the daily rates and air tickets for participating in representatives’ sessions of the Mercosur Parliament.

The budget of the Mercosur Parliament is approximately one million dollars (about $ 1.7 million reais), divided equally among the four member countries, and for maintaining the seat of Parliament, employees and facilities in the city of Montevideo, Uruguay.While there is no direct election of Parlasur, the Brazilian Representation has its formation in accordance with Resolution 01/07, of the National Congress. The current composition is made with the coefficient of party proportionality in the beginning of the current Legislature. It is worth remembering that the parties joined the block just in the House of Representatives, not in the Senate.
