The parliaments’ contribution in the fight against drug traffic and organized crime was the subject of the 8th Parliamentary Meeting of the G8 countries and European Parliament, in the weekend (12th and 13th), in Rome. The presidents of the Chambers of Brazil, China, India, Mexico and South Africa (G5) and Egypt attended the meeting.

“The event placed the Brazilian Parliament among the world's most powerful countries. Important as that was the fact that Brazil was recognized as an important country in the international scope”, said the President of the Chamber, Michel Temer.

That was the first time a President of the Chamber of Deputies of Brazil was invited to attend the event. Out of seven G8 parliamentary meetings held until now, only the one in UK, in 2005, before Italy, decided on inviting colleagues of other countries.

The G8 parliamentary meeting happens annually in the host country of the summit of Chief of State and Government of the group. Deputies Antônio Carlos Magalhães Neto (DEM-SP), second vice-president of the House, and Fábio Ramalho (PV-MG), also attended the meeting.

Dialogue
On Sunday, there was a presentation of the director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the Italian Antonio Costa, with a debate on the policies adopted by each country. “One of the major results was the encouragement to the joint cooperation among the countries, by means of international agreements”, reported Michel Temer.

Temer considers that the dialogue with the Prime Minister of Italy, Silvio Berlusconi, was especially profitable. “I emphasized that the internal fight against violence is not enough to the countries, once the organized crime is worldwide. Cooperation is essential”.
