Children’s website of the Chamber promotes chat on child sexual abuse
Chat with Deputy Eduardo Barbosa happens on Thursday (21)
In order to commemorate the National Day for the Fight against Sexual Exploitation of Children and Teenagers (May 18th), the children’s website of the Chamber of Deputies, Plenarinho (Little House Floor, www.plenarinho.gov.br), promotes a chat with Deputy Eduardo Barbosa (PSDB-MG) on Thursday (21).
Plenarinho also produced CDs containing the cartoon “Sexual Abuse: do not fall in that trap”, to prevent that crime. The animation will be distributed to schools visiting the Chamber this month.
The objective of that cartoon is to encourage children to denounce any suspect behavior and always to tell it to their mother, father, to a teacher or to some other adult. The animation tells the story of a girl, who nearly suffers abuse by a neighbor and family acquaintance. Such as in real cases, the abuser is closer to the child then one could imagine. The girl is only able to escape after telling he mother about what is happening.
Growth
The amount of children and teenagers suffering sexual abuse in Brazil has been growing in the last years. And worse, the victims are younger and younger. According to studies from Unicef, 49% of the children suffering that kind of violence are from 2 to 5 years old. From each ten registered cases, in eight the abuser is someone known by the child – most often, someone he/she likes or in whom he/she trusts. In general, abuse happens at his/her home.
The English version of the animation “Sexual Abuse: Do not fall in that trap” was presented by Deputy Paulo Henrique Lustosa (PMDB-CE) at the Conference on Legislative Reform to Achieve Human Rights, produced by Unicef in New York.
