Temer affirms that tax reform will be one of the priorities of 2009

Its main objective is the re-composition of the federative pact

On Tuesday (3), the president of the Chamber, Michel Temer, affirmed during a press briefing that tax reform will be one of the priority items on the agenda of the Chamber this year. He reminded that, in his second mandate as a president (1999-2000), the reform also became the priority in the debates and was even approved by the special committee which had analyzed the matter, but the lack of consensus inside the government itself on those changes eventually prevented its approval at the House Floor.

He warned, though, that the reform should not provoke conflicts, since its main goal is currently to establish mechanisms to match conflicting interests. “Tax reform cannot displease several interests at once.” Its objective, according to him, should be the re-composition of the federative pact, by matching the interests of federative bodies and of the productive sector.

The president of the Chamber affirmed that tax and political reform should be voted by the beginning of next year, or they will no longer be implemented, since, in March and April, the electoral debate starts to strengthen. “I intend to vote those subjects still this year”, he said.
