Quirino Campofiorito

Pintor, desenhista, gravador, professor e crítico de arte. Estudou na Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, no Rio de Janeiro, com Modesto Brocos, João Batista da Costa, Augusto Bracet e Rodolfo Chambelland. Em 1929 ganha prêmio de viagem à Europa, onde permanece de 1930 a 1934. Em Paris, estuda no ateliê de Pongheon, na Académie Julian e na Académie de la Grand Chaumière. Em Roma, entre 1932 e 1934, freqüenta o curso de pintura da Escola de Belas Artes e o curso de desenho do Círculo Artístico e da Academia Inglesa de Roma.

Retornando ao Brasil, entre 1935 e 1937, organiza e dirige curso de pintura na Escola de Belas Artes de Araraquara, SP. Publicou e dirigiu o jornal Belas Artes, primeiro jornal brasileiro a tratar exclusivamente de arte. Transferiu-se para o Rio de Janeiro em 1938. Lecionou desenho artístico e arte decorativa na Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, da qual se tornou vice-diretor. Em 1940, integrou a comissão organizadora da divisão moderna do Salão Nacional de Belas Artes. Entre 1961 e 1963 integrou a Comissão Nacional de Belas Artes. Em 1981, ganhou o título de Professor Emérito da Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro.

É autor, entre outros, do livro História da Pintura Brasileira no Século XIX, publicado pelas Edições Pinakotheke, 1983, o qual recebeu o prêmio Jabuti da Câmara Brasileira do Livro.

Painter, draftsman, printmaker, educator, and art critic. He studied at the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro with Modesto Brocos, João Batista da Costa, Augusto Bracet, and Rodolfo Chambelland. In 1929, he received a travel award to Europe, where he stayed from 1930 to 1934. In Paris, he trained at the studio of Pongheon, the Académie Julian, and the Académie de la Grande Chaumière. In Rome, between 1932 and 1934, he attended painting courses at the School of Fine Arts and drawing courses at the Art Circle and the British Academy in Rome.

Upon returning to Brazil, between 1935 and 1937, he organized and directed a painting course at the School of Fine Arts of Araraquara, São Paulo. He published and edited Belas Artes, the first Brazilian newspaper dedicated exclusively to art. In 1938, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he taught artistic drawing and decorative arts at the National School of Fine Arts, eventually serving as its vice-director. In 1940, he joined the organizing committee of the modern division of the National Salon of Fine Arts. Between 1961 and 1963, he served on the National Commission of Fine Arts. In 1981, he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Campofiorito is the author, among other works, of História da Pintura Brasileira no Século XIX (History of Brazilian Painting in the 19th Century), published by Edições Pinakotheke in 1983, which received the Jabuti Prize from the Brazilian Book Chamber.
