Chico da Silva

Pintor. Francisco da Silva, ou Chico da Silva como era conhecido, transferiu-se aos seis anos com a sua família para o Ceará, fixando-se em Fortaleza, onde exerceu pequenas atividades artesanais como produção de tamancos ou cobrindo guarda-chuvas até que, no início da década de 40, o pintor e crítico de arte suíço Jean-Pierre Chabloz descobre seu talento e passa a fornece-lhe cartolinas e tinta guache para pintar. Sempre apoiado por este, participou do 1° Salão Municipal de Abril, em 1943; expôs na Galeria Askanazy, do Rio de Janeiro, em 1945; na Galeria Pour l'Art, de Lausanne, Suíça, em 1950; e no Museu Etnográfico de Neuchâtel, também na Suíça, em 1956. Sua obra correu mundo, tendo, em 1966, representado o Brasil na XXXIII Bienal Internacional de Veneza, onde conquista menção honrosa.

About the artist

Painter. Francisco da Silva, known as Chico da Silva, moved with his family to the state of Ceará at the age of six, settling in Fortaleza. There he carried out small artisanal activities, such as making wooden clogs and repairing umbrella covers, until, in the early 1940s, the Swiss painter and art critic Jean-Pierre Chabloz discovered his talent and began providing him with cardboard and gouache paint to work with. With Chabloz’s continuous support, he took part in the 1st Municipal Salão de Abril in 1943; exhibited at the Askanazy Gallery in Rio de Janeiro in 1945; at the Pour l'Art Gallery in Lausanne, Switzerland, in 1950; and at the Ethnographic Museum of Neuchâtel, also in Switzerland, in 1956. His work gained international circulation, and in 1966 he represented Brazil at the 33rd Venice International Biennale, where he received an honorable mention.
