Após a ampliação do Edifício Principal no início da década de 70, Oscar Niemeyer elaborou um projeto de decoração do Salão Verde e Salão Nobre, incluindo obras de arte e mobiliário, para atender à proposta de delimitar os espaços e valorizar os ambientes da Casa. Os muros escultóricos de Athos Bulcão foram elaborado especificamente para este fim.

Artista plástico e professor. Principal colaborador de Oscar Niemeyer no âmbito da produção plástica de integração arte-arquitetura. Criador de extensa obra nessa área, tendo desenvolvido grande número de trabalhos em azulejo, concreto, madeira policromada e outras técnicas. Criou obras com vários outros arquitetos, como João Filgueiras Lima, o Lelé. É provavelmente o mais significativo artista brasileiro do século XX na área de integração arquitetônica. Ao abandonar a faculdade de medicina, iniciou seus estudos de pintura com Cândido Portinari. Em 1941, expôs pela primeira vez no Salão Nacional de Belas Artes e, em 1944, realizou sua primeira individual, no Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro. Em 1945 trabalhou, junto com outros jovens artistas como ajudante de Portinari na realização do Painel de São Francisco de Assis, na Igreja da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte. Recebeu bolsa do governo francês, permanecendo em Paris de 1948 a 1950, período em que recebeu menção honrosa no concurso de desenho da Cité Universitaire. Em 1949, participou do álbum 10 Artistes de I’Amérique Latine, organizado por Carlos Scliar. Em 1950, de volta ao Rio, trabalhou com ilustrações de livros e revistas e com cenários para teatro. Em 1952, realizou suas primeiras fotomontagens. Em 1958, transferiu-se para Brasília. Colaborou em projetos de Niemeyer na França, Itália e Argélia, integrando sua equipe na construção de Brasília. Em 1993 foi criada nessa ciade a Fundação Athos Bulcão. Em 1996 recebeu da Presidência da República o título de comendador da Ordem do Mérito Cultural.

About his work
After the expansion of the Main Building in the early 1970s, Oscar Niemeyer developed a decoration project for the Green Hall and the Noble Hall, including artworks and furniture, in order to define the spaces and enhance the environments of the House. The sculptural walls by Athos Bulcão were created specifically for this purpose.

Visual artist and teacher. The main collaborator of Oscar Niemeyer in the field of artistic production integrating art and architecture. Creator of an extensive body of work in this area, having developed a large number of works in tile, concrete, polychrome wood, and other techniques. He created works with several other architects, such as João Filgueiras Lima, known as Lelé. He is probably the most significant Brazilian artist of the 20th century in the field of architectural integration.
After leaving medical school, he began studying painting with Cândido Portinari. In 1941, he exhibited for the first time at the National Fine Arts Salon, and in 1944, he held his first solo exhibition at the Institute of Brazilian Architects in Rio de Janeiro. In 1945, together with other young artists, he worked as an assistant to Portinari in the creation of the Panel of Saint Francis of Assisi for the Pampulha Church in Belo Horizonte. He received a scholarship from the French government and stayed in Paris from 1948 to 1950, during which he received an honorable mention in the drawing competition of the Cité Universitaire. In 1949, he participated in the album 10 Artistes de l’Amérique Latine, organized by Carlos Scliar. In 1950, upon returning to Rio, he worked on illustrations for books and magazines and created set designs for the theater. In 1952, he produced his first photomontages.
In 1958, he moved to Brasília. He collaborated on Niemeyer’s projects in France, Italy, and Algeria, and was part of his team during the construction of Brasília. In 1993, the Athos Bulcão Foundation was created in that city. In 1996, he received from the Presidency of the Republic the title of Commander of the Order of Cultural Merit.
