Há inúmeras obras de Athos Bulcão no Congresso Nacional e no acervo do Museu. O painel Ventania, por exemplo, foi criado no início da década de 70, quando o Edifício Principal sofreu um acréscimo de 15 m de largura ao longo de toda a sua fachada posterior. Essa ampliação permitiu restaurar o espaço livre do Salão Verde, que estava na época ocupado indevidamente por salas de trabalho.

Artista plástico e professor. Principal colaborador de Oscar Niemeyer, desenvolveu incontável número de trabalhos em azulejo, concreto, madeira policromada e outras técnicas. Criou também obras com diversos outros arquitetos, como João Filgueiras Lima, o Lelé. É, provavelmente, o mais significativo artista brasileiro do século XX na área de integração arquitetônica. Ao abandonar a faculdade de medicina, iniciou seus estudos de pintura com Cândido Portinari. Em 1941, expôs pela primeira vez no Salão Nacional de Belas Artes e, em 1944, realizou sua primeira individual, no Instituto dos Arquitetos do Brasil, Rio de Janeiro. Em 1945 trabalhou como ajudante de Cândido Portinari na realização do Painel de São Francisco de Assis, na Igreja da Pampulha, Belo Horizonte. Com bolsa do governo francês, permaneceu em Paris de 1948 a 1950. Ali, recebeu menção honrosa no concurso de desenho da Cité Universitaire. Em 1949, participou do álbum 10 Artistes de I’Amérique Latine, organizado por Carlos Scliar. De volta ao Rio, trabalhou com ilustrações de livros e revistas e com cenários para teatro. Em 1952, realiza suas primeiras fotomontagens, e em 1958 mudou-se para Brasília. Colaborou em projetos de Niemeyer na França, Itália e Argélia, integrando a equipe daquele na construção da capital brasileira. Em 1993, foi criada a Fundação Athos Bulcão. Em 1996, Bulcão recebeu, da Presidência da República, o título de comendador da Ordem do Mérito Cultural.

Visual artist and professor. The principal collaborator of Oscar Niemeyer, he developed an innumerable body of work in tile, concrete, polychromed wood, and other techniques. He also created works with several other architects, such as João Filgueiras Lima (Lelé). He is probably the most significant Brazilian artist of the 20th century in the field of architectural integration.
After abandoning medical school, he began his studies in painting with Cândido Portinari. In 1941, he exhibited for the first time at the National Salon of Fine Arts, and in 1944 held his first solo exhibition at the Brazilian Institute of Architects in Rio de Janeiro. In 1945, he worked as an assistant to Cândido Portinari on the creation of the Panel of Saint Francis of Assisi at the Pampulha Church in Belo Horizonte.
With a scholarship from the French government, he stayed in Paris from 1948 to 1950, where he received an honorable mention in the drawing competition of the Cité Universitaire. In 1949, he participated in the album *10 Artists from Latin America*, organized by Carlos Scliar. Upon returning to Rio de Janeiro, he worked on book and magazine illustrations and stage sets for theater.
In 1952, he produced his first photomontages, and in 1958 he moved to Brasília. He collaborated on Niemeyer’s projects in France, Italy, and Algeria, and was part of Niemeyer’s team in the construction of Brazil’s capital. In 1993, the Athos Bulcão Foundation was established. In 1996, Bulcão received the title of Commander of the Order of Cultural Merit from the Presidency of the Republic.
Works of art
There are numerous works by Athos Bulcão in the National Congress and in the Museum’s collection. The panel Ventania, for example, was created in the early 1970s, when the Main Building underwent an expansion of 15 meters in width along its entire rear façade. This enlargement made it possible to restore the open space of the Green Hall (Salão Verde), which at the time was improperly occupied by work rooms.
