Após a ampliação do Edifício Principal no início da década de 70, Oscar Niemeyer elaborou um projeto de decoração do Salão Verde e Salão Nobre, incluindo obras de arte e mobiliário, para atender à proposta de delimitar os espaços e valorizar os ambientes do Salão Verde. Dentre estas obras, consta a escultura conhecida como “Anjo”. A obra assemelha-se aos anjos da Catedral de Brasília, feitos pelo mesmo artista.

Escultor, desenhista e professor. Um dos principais colaboradores de Oscar Niemeyer na realização de projetos de integração arte-arquitetura. Em 1940, ingressou na Escola Nacional de Belas Artes, no Rio de Janeiro. Em 1944, realiza o primeiro projeto em colaboração com Oscar Niemeyer, o baixo-relevo do batistério da Igreja de São Francisco de Assis, Pampulha, em Belo Horizonte. Em 1956, vence o concurso de projetos para o Monumento aos Mortos da II Guerra Mundial, no Rio de Janeiro, executando o conjunto alusivo às Três Forças Armadas. Integrou a Comissão Nacional de Belas Artes em 1960. De 1963 a 1965 lecionou escultura e desenho na Universidade de Brasília. Das suas esculturas em Brasília, destacam-se As Banhistas, em frente ao Palácio da Alvorada, A Justiça, em frente ao Superior Tribunal Federal, Os Anjos e Os Quatro Evangelistas, na Catedral, e As Gêmeas, na cobertura do Palácio do Itamaraty.

About the work of art

After the expansion of the Main Building in the early 1970s, Oscar Niemeyer developed a decoration project for the Green Hall and Noble Hall, including artworks and furniture, to meet the proposal of defining the spaces and enhancing the environments of the Green Hall. Among these works is the sculpture known as the ‘Angel.’ The piece resembles the angels of the Brasília Cathedral, created by the same artist.

Sculptor, draftsman, and professor. One of Oscar Niemeyer’s main collaborators in the execution of projects integrating art and architecture. In 1940, he entered the National School of Fine Arts in Rio de Janeiro. In 1944, he carried out his first collaborative project with Oscar Niemeyer: the bas-relief of the baptistery of the Church of São Francisco de Assis, in Pampulha, Belo Horizonte. In 1956, he won the design competition for the Monument to the Dead of World War II in Rio de Janeiro, creating the ensemble alluding to the Three Armed Forces. He joined the National Commission of Fine Arts in 1960. From 1963 to 1965, he taught sculpture and drawing at the University of Brasília. Among his sculptures in Brasília, notable works include The Bathers, in front of the Palácio da Alvorada; Justice, in front of the Supreme Federal Court; The Angels and The Four Evangelists, in the Cathedral; and The Twins, on the roof of the Itamaraty Palace.
